Evolution of C4 photosynthesis

Evolution of C4 photosynthesis

The plant taxon Alloteropsis shows incredible variation in the component traits required for C4 photosynthesis, a physiological pathway that boosts carbon fixation. Our work with this plant looks at how C4 genes have evolved from C3 ancestors, how the anatomy necessary for C4 photosynthesis arose, and how this novel photosynthetic pathway changes the ecological behaviour of the plant.
